All the system services in /etc/rc.d, and most if not all ports-installed services now refer to /etc/rc.subr.  Earlier versions of FreeBSD (pre-5.x ?) that used this function library, used /usr/local/etc/rc.subr.  It would be helpful I think, to discuss how this changes the startup mechanism, and how to use the subroutines in this file.  Should that discussion appear in this article?  [[User:Ninereasons|Ninereasons]] 18:30, 3 May 2006 (EDT)

wtf, wasn't there an article here before? Aren't we missing a LOT of articles from "Important Config Files" now? And for some reason some of them show up in the category page - like this one, even though there IS NO CATEGORY TAG - and others show as "uncategorized", even though there IS a category tag (like /etc/master.passwd)...

rc.subr

All the system services in /etc/rc.d, and most if not all ports-installed services now refer to /etc/rc.subr. Earlier versions of FreeBSD (pre-5.x ?) that used this function library, used /usr/local/etc/rc.subr. It would be helpful I think, to discuss how this changes the startup mechanism, and how to use the subroutines in this file. Should that discussion appear in this article?
