The master password file; the linux equivalent is the shadow password file. master.passwd should not be edited directly, you shold instead use vipw which will call your default editor (ee or vi, most likely,) allow you to edit the file and then check that the format is right before letting you save it. As in linux, /etc/passwd has the information that should be available publically (shell info, etc).
