The master password file; the linux equivalent is the shadow password file. master.passwd should not be edited directly, you shold instead use [[vipw]] which will call your default editor ([[ee]] or [[vi]], most likely,) allow you to edit the file and then check that the format is right before letting you save it. As in linux, /etc/passwd has the information that should be available publically (shell info, etc).
