Flat files

Flat files are the simplest kind of database: at their most complex, they're a slightly specialized type of spreadsheet. (At their least complex, they are spreadsheets.)

Common examples of flat file databases are FreeBSD's rc.conf, Apache's httpd.conf, and BIND's zone files. (In the Windows world, .INI files serve the same purpose.)
