The type builtin shell command under some shells (sh, bash, and zsh), returns information about a single word. This command is not built into the C shell, which is the default in FreeBSD (see which and where).

[edit] Examples

 sh$ type type
type is a shell builtin

 bash$ type -a lynx
lynx is aliased to `lynx -use_mouse'
lynx is /usr/local/bin/lynx

[edit] C shell equivalent

 tcsh> where lynx

/usr/local/bin/lynx
